Q: Is concrete right for you?
A: Concrete provides a sense of warmth and mass. It is incredibly
versatile as a finishing material. Traditional or contemporary- it can be
finished to resemble antiqued rustic stone or glass-like polished tile.
Q: Do concrete countertops stain?
A: This depends on the sealer. For most residential projects, we use a
water-based penetrating sealer which leaves the concrete looking and feeling
natural. In this state, the concrete has approximately the same porosity as
marble. Acids can etch the surface -- red wine, lemon juice, and vinegar
especially. However, like aged butcher block or marble, a patina on a cast
concrete product can actually enhance the character of the surface. Cleaning up
soon after spills and keeping the counter clean are the best way to minimize
staining. Alternatively and mostly for commercial projects, a topical sealer is
used to create an impermeable surface.
Q: Do they crack?
A: No. Our products are guaranteed against structural cracking.
Hairline cracks, although rare, can develop. These are not structural failures,
they are inherent to the property of the material, and are easily fixed if
desired.
Q: What is the cost?
A: Installed square foot pricing varies depending on your location.
Generally, our price compares with high quality stone products such as marble
and soap stone. Contact us for a quote.
Q: How do our countertops compare with granite on price?
A: The cost of producing our countertops has very little
to do with the size of the piece and everything to do with the complexity of the
form, the mold making process, and the desired finish.Q: Can concrete be used as a cutting surface?
A: No. Cast concrete is not a substitute for a cutting
board.
Q: Can I put a hot pot directly on a cast concrete countertop?
A: Yes, concrete is very heat resistant, although it is
subject to thermal shock. We recommend using stainless steel or brass trivets for hot cookware.
Q: Do I need to reinforce the supporting cabinetry in order to accommodate the weight of a concrete counter?
A: Average to high-end cabinets will support the weight
of our countertops.
